Find a way to empower patients in clinical research and you could end up partnering with Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS and Janssen Pharmaceutica to take clinical trials into the future.
3 Challenges, 3 Opportunities for Innovation in Clinical Trials
Uberizing Clinical Trials
How might we bring clinical trials into the community and people’s homes – and outside clinics – by utilizing telemedicine and “uberizing” the existing healthcare resources around the patients, including GPs, local healthcare providers and home visiting nurses? What resources could be used? How could such resources be used in a valid and reliable way? And how might we make this a reality from a business model perspective?
How might we empower patients to drive their own medical research? While research today is still driven by academia and the pharmaceutical industry, there are opportunities for patients to take more of an initiative, researching what is important to them, utilizing existing data and using validated scientific tools to generate more data to gain additional insights into their own condition. In this scenario, the tables would be turned with professional researchers and pharmaceutical companies being invited by patients to take on a supportive role in their research. What might such a model look like and how might we make this a reality?
Using Real-World Data in Research
The world is full of health-related data. In our daily lives, we are constantly generating data that could be useful for healthcare and medical research. However, such data is highly fragmented and very difficult to access, both by patients and by professional researchers. So how might we give patients – and researchers – easier access to health-related data, while also protecting privacy and being compliant with GDPR legislation?
Partner with Johnson & Johnson Innovation JLABS
Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS (JLABS) and Janssen Pharmaceutica are firmly committed to the principles of open innovation and therefore very interested in exploring possible collaborations with Hack Belgium teams who come up with promising solutions to their challenges.
There are various opportunities in this regard, from employment or incubation to investment and commercial agreements. JLABS will attend the Life After Hack Belgium Pitch event in April 2019 to assess the teams who have responded to the innovation in clinical trials and cigarette smoking challenges.
The best teams will be invited to JLABS @ BE, the first JLABS site in Europe, hosted on the Janssen Pharmaceutica R&D Campus in Beerse, Belgium for a more thorough evaluation and to explore a possible path to continued collaboration and partnership.
Create Your Solution To The Challenges
About the Health Societal Theme
While humanity has made considerable progress in reducing the global burden of disease, the job is not complete and new challenges are emerging.
According to the World Health Organization, nearly six million children still die before their 5th birthday, and diseases such as AIDS and malaria still kill millions. Antimicrobial resistance means that infectious disease remains a major threat to global health.
The prevalence of chronic illness is increasing rapidly and most healthcare systems are still ill-equipped to address such challenges.
At the same time, there might be tremendous opportunity to prevent or reduce the impact of diseases that afflict us today, through lifestyle change or minimally invasive interventions facilitated by prediction and early interception, even before clinical symptoms are present.
We urgently need to find transformational solutions that can change the lives of people in both developed and developing countries. We must take a more holistic approach that does not rely solely on treating diseases, but addresses disease along the entire continuum of health, including prevention, disease interception and cure.
Fortunately, recent technological advances and the availability and utilization of data can be great enablers in this regard. But, we also need to collaborate across the entire healthcare ecosystem, including patients, to build truly integrated solutions, with the joint objective to create a world without disease. So, join us in the healthcare revolution, and together we have the potential to do so much more!
