Address the challenges of our educational system, as perceived by high school students.
Challenges of High School Students
With Vlaamse Scholierenkoepel
The Vlaamse Scholierenkoepel, an association of Flemish high school students, contributed what they, as scholars, understand to be the biggest challenges of our educational system:
The structural gap in school results between people who are new in Belgium (first or second generation) and others.
The negative reputation of being a teacher, the high dropout rates among new teachers and the large amount of job vacancies in the near future.
The lack of lifelong learning and teamwork among teachers in the majority of schools.
Student participation & democratic culture
We need a more democratic culture in schools, with a multitude of real opportunities for students to participate.
Lack of personalised, talent-oriented curricula and guidance
The dominant ‘one size fits all’-model in high schools, instead of a more ‘talent-approach’ to form a curricula.
There is an overall negative approach in advising students about their careers: “you’re not good at Latin, go do science” of “you’re failing at languages, go do human sciences”. Students report a general lack of advice on what are my talents and interests and what curriculum is the best way for me to develop myself.
Brainstorm Solutions to the Challenges
To solve the above challenges, we recommend you to take part in the Ideation Workshops Inclusive High Quality Education, Vocational guidance & training, and the roundup workshop on Day 1.
