Encourage households and the food processing industry to undertake actions towards reducing their food waste.
As inconceivable as it may sound, every day, we throw away perfectly delicious food all along the food chain – from farm to fork. It is no secret that an estimated 1/3 of the produced food is thrown away and that this has a colossal environmental impact.
Do we also realize the huge economic loss? While wasting food, we throw money in the bin all along the food chain. According to the Champions 12.3 Business Case for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, globally an estimated €825 billion in economic value could be saved each year (1)!
In Belgium, over 10.000 tonnes of food is wasted on a daily basis (2), with households and food processing companies as major contributors. While governments have committed to strategies that tackle the problem, the route to radical waste reductions at the household and food processing level is still wide open.
It is clear that there is a solid business case for cities and companies to reduce food loss and waste. After launching a nationwide initiative to reduce food waste in 2007, Champions 12.3 saw the level of food waste in UK households being reduced by 21%. Furthermore, benefit-cost ratio was 275:1 meaning that every €1 invested in actions to fight food waste resulted in savings of more than €275 (3)! In Belgium, these numbers translate to over €200 of yearly savings per average household (2).
So what are we waiting for? Let’s come up with actions that radically reduce the food waste level of households!
Feast on Food Waste with FoodWIN
FoodWIN is the network of Food Waste Innovators. They fight against food waste in the urban food system. They do this by showing solutions and actions against food waste and by supporting cities and their stakeholders in their strategy to reduce food waste.
FoodWIN will award the team with the most promising solution to their challenge with a ticket to the Food Waste Fest, scheduled the week after Hack Belgium! It is the main food waste innovation event of the year, where successful solutions to food waste will be celebrated and shared. Although food waste is a complex and regretful problem, this day proves there are ways forward.
The Food Waste Fest is where decision makers and civil servants of cities and municipalities, executives and facilitation managers of Belgian and European food companies meet pioneering food waste changemakers.
FoodWIN will also attend the Life After Hack Belgium Pitch event, where opportunities for collaboration and exchange can be crystallised.
Create Your Solution To The Challenges
To solve the above challenges, we recommend you take part in the No More Food Waste Workshop in the ‘Fabulous Food Forever ’ theme on Day 1, where a mix of ideas will be brainstormed and teams will be formed.

About the Food Societal Theme
Our food and agricultural systems threaten the planet’s vulnerable ecosystems. Many food producers are struggling to produce against the odds of climate change and market pricing mechanisms. So how might we create more sustainable food production systems while making healthy food accessible for all?
