There are 250 entrepreneurial, socially conscious, and proactive university students (undergraduate, graduate and PhD) coming to Hack Belgium – the creme de la creme of their generation.
There are also dozens of innovation-driven, exciting companies coming to Hack Belgium, the ones that take future seriously and make an immense effort to drive change in their respective industries.
We thought the two should meet.
So we put together a matchmaking program that connects students to companies and companies to students.
The program matches students and companies, and then gets them to spend 3 days working together at Hack Belgium. Both sides then have the time to really find out if they are a good match for each other, and to build a relationship.
We think it’s a great opportunity for both sides to do recruitment / job hunt differently: students are fed up with the tedious job fairs, and it’s increasingly hard for companies the exceptional talent they need through traditional means.
Why is Hack Belgium a better way to recruit?
Here’s why Alexandre Chimon, Director of Operations Europe at Keemotion, is keen to use Hack Belgium for recruiting students:
“We recruit a good deal of students with IT background. We obviously test their programming skills, but there’s a more important second part: we need to see how they tick and if they would fit with the culture of the company.
So we want to sit down with the students and have a three-day-long interview without the interview stress, ideally in the kind of environment that would encourage people to share more, so you can get to know them better. This is especially important for a startup – as we’re still finding our own culture and personality, we have an idea of where we want our culture to go, but sometimes it is difficult to communicate. It also might be too ambitious and never going to work. So instead you have to see how the personality fits with the rest of your team.
At Hack Belgium we can see how they think and how they interact with our team, how they solve problems even if it’s problems outside IT.
The problems at Hack Belgium are much wider, and that encourages people to think wider around them. A coding hackathon is a horse race, whereas Hack Belgium is a sandbox that helps to get creative and encourages people to come out of their shells. It’s clear that the outcome is NOT code, not a specific solution – so it takes a lot of the pressure out from the interviewees, people can express their creativity much better. At Hack Belgium they aren’t in “the interview mode”, they open up and you get a much better feeling if they would fit… or not.”
Here’s how it works for companies
Tell us what jobs or internship positions you have open, and what kind of students you would like to recruit – IT, business, arts, design, etc.
We get the word out to our students – both the ones who already have their tickets and to the ones still considering coming to Hack Belgium.
Students apply and you get the CVs of those who applied for your job or internship opportunities.
You choose the students you want to work with you at Hack Belgium, and then you spend the three days with them at the event.
If sparks fly (both ways), you’ve got yourself amazing new talent.
