Find a way to improve access to training programmes for migrants and prevent worsening alienation.
The Challenge: Migrants’ Access to Training
Migrants often find themselves in a deadlock: in most cases they cannot work nor train while they are waiting for a decision as to whether they are entitled to refugee status/residence permit or not. The decision can sometimes take more than a year and leaves them in a situation of permanent uncertainty. Waiting for so long and being able to do so little leads to a long-term erosion of skills and aspirations, and often exacerbates a sense of alienation and hopelessness.
How can we set up a system of training and certifications that could help migrants integrate in the labour market of the host country? How can we also include clandestine migrants, who do not wish to reveal their identity? Can the certification be based on something else than “paper” identity?
Collaboration with Libraries Without Borders
Libraries Without Borders ( BSF) is very interested in exploring possible collaborations with Hack Belgium teams who come up with promising solutions to their challenges.
Libraries Without Borders’ mission is to improve access to education and information for all by strengthening the actions of librarians and other actors of formal and non-formal education in France, Belgium and 20 other countries around the world.
Since 2010, following the earthquake in Haiti, BSF has developed a strong expertise in the field of intervention in situations of humanitarian crisis thanks to a media library kit that can be deployed on the most difficult terrain. At the same time, BSF is naturally committed to the digital world and is developing numerous projects that make digital technology available to education.

Even in Europe, we are leaving many behind, with educational inequality remaining high. So join us in building more equitable education that prepares us all for a more knowledge-intensive economy.
