Find a way to empower type 2 diabetes patients and their caregivers and you could end up partnering with AstraZeneca.
3 Challenges, 3 Opportunities for Innovation in Diabetes
Early awareness of diabetes
Diabetes is perceived as a disease focused on treating blood sugar levels (HbA1c) only. However, type 2 diabetic patients are at risk of developing micro- and macrovascular complications that are both dependent and independent of HbA1C, which is not known by many patients. So, how can we raise awareness among all stakeholders (patients, family, caregivers) that diabetes is not only about reducing sugar levels but also about managing different cardiovascular parameters including (but not limited to) weight and blood pressure to ultimately prevent cardiovascular events? How can we drive a lifestyle change as early as possible in the disease evolution and educate patients that a multifactorial approach of the disease is more appropriate? How can we make patients and their families accountable for the wellbeing of diabetes patients?
Awareness and education is powerful. If you’re at risk for type 2 diabetes, education can help prevent or delay the progression of the disease. And education that helps our communities offer support to tackle a life-changing disease is invaluable.
T2 Diabetes patient communication
Type 2 diabetes is a disease with lifestyle-based causes and dangerous complications. It is characterized by the fact that the pancreas is not producing sufficient insulin to transport blood sugar (glucose) to the organs supplying them of energy. Consequently, the glucose levels remain too high and can increase the probability of micro and macrovascular complications at the level of the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, feet, etc. An increasing amount of evidence is showing the link between T2 diabetes and heart failure specifically.
As many Type 2 Diabetes patients are not aware of the complications that their disease can cause, they are not aware of the care that exists to support them better in their disease such as blood sugar level measurements at home, medication, education and lifestyle management. How can we make patients more vocal in addressing their needs to better manage their disease? How can we transform type 2 diabetes care together for greater freedom and better health?
T2 Diabetes condition management
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and is critical for managing the disease. People living with Type 2 Diabetes should realize that being overweight or obese or having an increased blood pressure makes it difficult to manage the disease and its progression.
Lots of care is put in place to support Type 2 Diabetes patients to take care of their health. How can we make Type 2 Diabetes patients more accountable and responsible for their own disease condition? How can we empower and educate Type 2 Diabetes patients to a greater extent? How can we make the patient more responsible together with a multidisciplinary team (diabetes educator, general practitioner, specialist, pharmacist, podiatrist, dietician, etc. for the management of his/her chronic disease?
Partner with with AstraZeneca
AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines, primarily for the treatment of diseases in three therapy areas – Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism and Respiratory. AstraZeneca operates in over 100 countries and its innovative medicines are used by millions of patients worldwide
About AstraZeneca in Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism (CVRM)
Cardiovascular, renal and metabolism together form one of AstraZeneca’s main therapy areas and a key growth driver for the Company.
By following the science to understand more clearly the underlying links between the heart, kidneys and pancreas, AstraZeneca is investing in a portfolio of medicines to protect organs and improve outcomes by slowing disease progression, reducing risks and tackling co-morbidities.
Our ambition is to modify or halt the natural course of CVRM diseases and potentially regenerate organs and restore function, by continuing to deliver transformative science that improves treatment practices and cardiovascular health for millions of patients worldwide.
Hence, AstraZeneca is committed to fund, support and follow-up on truly added value projects demonstrating to go beyond the existing solutions addressing the challenges in T2D.
The project will be presented to and challenged by the AstraZeneca Senior Leadership team on innovation, solution-oriented and patient centricity.

About the Health Societal Theme
While humanity has made considerable progress in reducing the global burden of disease, the job is not complete and new challenges are emerging.
According to the World Health Organization, nearly six million children still die before their 5th birthday, and diseases such as AIDS and malaria still kill millions. Antimicrobial resistance means that infectious disease remains a major threat to global health.
The prevalence of chronic illness is increasing rapidly and most healthcare systems are still ill-equipped to address such challenges.
At the same time, there might be tremendous opportunity to prevent or reduce the impact of diseases that afflict us today, through lifestyle change or minimally invasive interventions facilitated by prediction and early interception, even before clinical symptoms are present.
We urgently need to find transformational solutions that can change the lives of people in both developed and developing countries. We must take a more holistic approach that does not rely solely on treating diseases, but addresses disease along the entire continuum of health, including prevention, disease interception and cure.
Fortunately, recent technological advances and the availability and utilization of data can be great enablers in this regard. But, we also need to collaborate across the entire healthcare ecosystem, including patients, to build truly integrated solutions, with the joint objective to create a world without disease. So, join us in the healthcare revolution, and together we have the potential to do so much more!
