    CITIES: Housing & infrastructure for growing, changing urban populations

    There is tremendous pressure on cities to grow. Cities attract people, very special people. Not just traditional households, but ever more singles, people with complex family setups (“bonus families”), old people, young people, poor people, rich people, people with a migrant background. There is ever more diversity and change in the demography of urban populations. And all these people want to live in cities and have access to affordable quality housing, transport, schools and public health.

    So how can we grow as cities and meet the changing needs of urban populations, without compromising on space? We can’t just erect more buildings and pour more concrete, because that will stifle our cities and make them unliveable. So join us in this workshop where we’ll come up with ideas for repurposing existing infrastructure in smarter ways, to meet the changing needs of our growing urban populations.

    EDUCATION: How can we achieve systemic change?

     

    In this workshop we will address the key challenge of education: how can we achieve systemic impact and scale up the innovations happening inside or outside the school system? How might we encourage change in a sector reluctant to too much evolution? How might we avoid reinventing the wheel? How might we improve collective action of parents, public authorities, teacher training programmes, schools and employers towards that common vision? Which tools or services can be designed to increase the impact of the education reforms?

    FOOD: Food for me, myself and I

     

    Consumers want more and more control over their eating patterns. Already food producers and caterers must allow for an ever-wider array of preferences, such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free. Looking ahead consumers will want ever more individually-tailored diets taking account of personal tastes and health factors. Besides the obvious benefits for consumers, such personalisation could also be an answer to the food waste problem, since production would be far more responsive to actual demand.

    In this workshop we’ll explore opportunities for creating such hyper-personalised products. We’ll explore what those products could look like, how they would be packaged, and where and how they will be sold and distributed to the consumers.  Finally, we’ll explore the additional services such as tailored dietary advice and support that consumers will expect from food producers and retailers.

    HEALTH: A new perspective on happy ageing

     

    In Europe, population ageing is a long-term trend with profound implications for our healthcare systems. As people age, they become more vulnerable to age-related disease and disability. Key risk factors include injury from falls, development of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and dementia. They are also more likely to suffer from social isolation and exclusion, in turn associated with mental health problems such as depression. In Europe, we urgently need to find better and more scalable ways of taking care of our ageing populations. This includes both detecting and diagnosing problems and effectively managing those problems in a sustainable way.  

    However, what we absolutely want to avoid is a situation where being old is equated to being permanently ‘in care.’ Actually, we would like to die young … as late as possible.

    How can we keep people for as long possible in a ‘life’ context? In other words, how can we provide the best possible care, but in effect make it invisible? For example, imagine the functionality and power of an ICU in your bedroom at home. How can we simplify complex medical technology and make it largely invisible to patients?  And how can we measure health parameters such a blood pressure in an entirely different way that is both automatic and invisible? Or better, what would it take to execute clinical trials, no longer in the artificial environment of a hospital, but in the Real World setting of your living room?

    Join us in this workshop and let’s create happy ageing environments of the future!

    MEDIA: Rebuilding trust by popping the echo bubbles

     

    The entire media sector is coming under withering criticism, being blamed for bias and a disregard of truth in their pursuit of ever more clicks. Real debate is further stifled by the algorithms that social media use to push mainly popular and affirming news stories to users, often lacking credibility, in absence of proper fact-checking. Such trends create – in the words of some commentators – “echo chambers” or “filter bubbles” that are partly to blame for the increasingly divided societies in the UK, Europe and the USA.

    So let’s come up with new media concepts that aren’t prone to clickbait, sensationalism and lazy reporting. Let’s create concepts that gently ease us out of our ‘echo chambers’ and create space for meaningful, trustworthy and complex debate.

    MOBILITY: Opportunities along the road to autonomous vehicles

    Autonomous cars and trucks will soon be a reality on roads everywhere. Nearly every major automotive and truck manufacturer, but also tech companies such as Uber and Alphabet, are investing massively in autonomous vehicle technology. And leading automotive brands such as Tesla, Volvo and BMW have already introduced pretty advanced driver assist features in their latest models.

    As we increasingly adopt autonomous driving technology, the entire mobility ecosystem and behavioural context will need to adapt. Regulators are urgently trying to respond. Road infrastructure will need to change. New mobility business models will emerge. Insurance will need to adapt. And we, as drivers, passengers and pedestrians, will need to adapt, because already many drivers are overestimating the technology (applying makeup while driving, falling asleep, driving drunk etc.).  

    In this workshop we’ll explore opportunities and solve challenges along the road towards autonomous driving.

     

    WORK: Fostering diversity & meaningful work for all

     

    Many organisations struggle in building a workforce that properly reflects the diversity of our communities. In this workshop we’ll explore initiatives for building a diverse workforce where everybody has meaningful work.


    OCEANS: ports of the future

    Little Belgium has four sea ports that in 2016 processed 283 million ton of goods from nearly 30,000 ocean going vessels. And together they create work for more than 220,000 people. In other words, the maritime industry is hugely important for the Belgian economy, but it also comes at a major environmental cost. Also, the industry has little room to expand given the shortage of land in this country.

    In this workshop we’ll explore ideas that will shape the future of our ports. For example, how can we improve the productivity and efficiency of our ports without building yet more docks or blowing more harmful gases in the atmosphere? How can we improve the connections with the hinterland, without further clogging up our already clogged up highways? And how can we accelerate the adoption of cleaner (hybrid/electric) and autonomous ships? Join us in this workshop to imagine the future of our maritime industry.

    CIRCULAR: Buildings as material banks

    As cities grow and the needs of urban populations evolve, so the stock of buildings keeps growing.  Often it is easiest to simply build more buildings instead of renovating existing buildings. And older buildings that have become obsolete or outdated are often simply demolished to make way for new buildings. That generates enormous waste in building materials. In this workshop we’ll explore how we can turn the building industry into a circular economy. Imagine buildings as Material Banks, as a temporary store of materials, the value of which is registered in building “passports”.


    Imagine buildings that can be easily disassembled and reused for new purposes.  Join us in this workshop to radically rethink the building and construction industry, creating more value for all stakeholders, including building owners, contractors, designers and the planet.

    ENERGY: Access to clean, safe energy in remote locations and developing region

    One in five people worldwide still lacks access to safe, clean energy, relying instead on firewood and candles for heat and light. Energy poverty is the worst kind of poverty.

    Also in the developed world, remote villages and rural areas often have sub-par access to reliable, clean energy. In this workshop we will explore solutions for producing, storing and transporting clean energy to off-grid locations.

    FINANCE: Financial Inclusion Through Advanced Financial Literacy

    Globally, almost 2 billion working-age adults do not use formal financial services and more than 50% of adults in the poorest households are unbanked. This lack of access to financial services remains a key obstacle in the fight against poverty. But access isn’t the sole hurdle preventing millions from participating fully in economic life. An important group of younger people remains reluctant to exploring the financial world. Millennials in particular are often poorly informed and therefore hesitant when undertaking even the more basic financial ventures such as saving and investing.

    Let’s explore how to improve financial literacy as a means to make financing accessible and purposeful to all layers of society – in particular to the financially less advantaged as well as to youngsters.

    CITIES: Embracing real diversity for more creative lives and cities

     Our cities are diverse, and while we all love the idea of diversity, most of us in Belgian cities live in a segregated reality. We live in an archipelago of segregated monocultures. Both physically and mentally we live in different worlds. That is a great shame, because the essence of a city is freedom and creativity. It is in cities that we have the freedom to meet people with different ideas, with different cultural backgrounds, with different origins, because that makes our lives richer and stimulates our creativity.

    Diversity only has real value when you engage with people who are different from you in your immediate circle; otherwise it just leads to distrust and suspicion. Join us in this workshop to create new initiatives and spaces, both physical and virtual, that break through the persistent segregation in our cities.

    MOBILITY: Physical Internet

    In this topic we’ll explore opportunities based on the idea of a Physical Internet, a new logistic paradigm where goods find their own way in an interconnected multimodal network. You can compare this to the way bits of information find their way through the global internet. Building on that metaphor, imagine logistics as an open platform for innovation. In contrast to the fragmented supply chains of today, imagine logistics as an integrated, multimodal transportation network and massive data hub, a platform that is highly autonomous, and governed in real-time by decentralised intelligence.

    Join us in this workshop and come up with entirely new ways to both extend the physical internet and build new services on top of the network and its intelligence. Think: drones, underground loops, new multi-functional models such as shop-while-you-travel and ever better e-commerce distribution models. We’ll explore how blockchain and artificial intelligence could transact and optimise logistical flows in real-time. We’ll imagine an entirely new world of logistics.

    FOOD: New sources of nutrition

    If we are to build a more sustainable food system, then we – especially in the West – will need to be open to more diverse sources of protein and nutrition. Since we can’t expect everyone to suddenly develop a taste for insects or a pure vegan diet, we will have to come up with practical, tasty and commercially viable food products and services that appeal to the masses.  Also, such innovation could be key to solving world hunger and malnutrition.

    In this workshop, we’ll discover opportunities for creating more sustainable and diverse food products that can entice Western consumers and maybe end hunger and malnutrition while we’re at it.

    WORK: Developing and evaluating digital skills

    In Belgium and Europe, we have a major shortage of digitally skilled people who are needed to fill jobs in all sectors. According to the EU Commission, we’re missing out on up to 750,000 ICT professional jobs by 2020, and that while youth unemployment is at almost 20%! With digital skills we don’t just mean high-level ICT specialist skills but the increasingly broad set of skills that we all need simply to participate in our increasingly digital societies and economies.

    In this workshop we’ll explore initiatives for boosting digital skills among key populations. We’ll look for better ways to (self-)assess people’s digital skills. We’ll come up with new ideas to train and empower unemployed people. And we’ll explore what employers can do to upskill people on the work floor.

    OCEANS: Plastic soup: Cleaning up our oceans

    Every year about 8 billion kilos of plastic waste is dumped in the ocean. If we continue at this rate, we’ll have more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050 (according to the Ellen McArthur Foundation). Such pollution is a total disaster because plastic particles enter the marine food chain, poisoning everything from coral and plankton to fish and ultimately humans too. In this workshop we’ll explore ideas for both preventing pollution and removing existing pollutants from the ocean.

    MAKE: manufacturing as a service

    For most aspirant entrepreneurs, manufacturing is seen as the domain of large, well-capitalised corporations or super rich entrepreneurs like Elon Musk. Most bootstrapping entrepreneurs cannot build a new factory. However, new technologies and business models such as digital prototyping and 3D printing are rapidly making manufacturing more accessible. And with the uberisation of manufacturing, where established factories sell excess machine capacity and materials on open marketplaces, manufacturing  can be in reach of practically anyone.

    In this workshop, we will explore opportunities around manufacturing as a service. We will take the perspective of the entrepreneur the producer and the platform operator. What sorts of services and interfaces do entrepreneurs expect from MaaS platform? What do producers expect from MaaS platforms? What is the optimal business model What services are needed? Join us in a quest for answers!

    EDUCATION: Innovating within the school system

    In this workshop we will address two interrelated challenges from within the school system. The first is: how can we best teach our children the “change maker” skills they need to survive and prosper in the 21st century? We’re talking empathy, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. The second is: how can we ensure that the best quality education is accessible to everyone? How can we counter the persistent inequality in educational outcomes, linked to socioeconomic backgrounds?

    So, what can schools do to better prepare children for their future? How can they personalise education more to the needs of individual children? Can using technology be part of a potential solution? And how can we better deploy the innovation that is currently happening in “elite” schools to all schools, including schools with vulnerable youth?

    HEALTH: Hospitals of the Future: Bold Ideas Needed!

    Europe encounters an increasing prevalence of chronic illness and a shortage of healthcare workers. If we want to treat tomorrow’s patients with the best possible medical care, then we will need radical innovation. Incremental improvements won’t do; instead we should be asking: how can we make this particular process or intervention 10X if not 100X better or more efficient?

    For hospitals the key challenge is to more effectively deploy specialized medical care over larger populations – and to do so beyond the hospital walls. In this context, patients will only come in when it is absolutely necessary, for example, for complex diagnostic tests, operations or emergencies. All the more routine interventions and follow-up could be done in a ‘virtual hospital’ on a remote basis, for instance, at the patient’s home. Primary care providers and monitoring technology, smart medical devices, collaborative health records and communication technology can help to make this happen.

    This transition will entail a major shift in the way healthcare is organized – and technology will play a pivotal role in enabling that shift. So join us in this workshop to create radically better and more scalable healthcare services that take us to a healthier future.

    CIRCULAR: Zero waste retail

    Within the challenge of building up a circular system in our world there is a super important stakeholder who sits in between the consumer and the producers: the retail sector. And the biggest challenge within the retail sector is packaging: it’s cheap, easy to produce, protects our protects and is super handy for marketing purposes. But it also generates a lot of waste!

    So, what would a retailer that only uses reusable packaging look like? How would the returns systems and logistics be arranged? And how could the producers still brand their products? Come to Hack Belgium and create the answer yourself!

    ENERGY: positive energy blocks

     In urban and industrial contexts, we’re still wasting huge amounts of energy and missing out on opportunities for better collaboration in the production, storage, transport and consumption of energy. In this workshop, we’ll use the paradigm of Positive Energy Blocks (groups of at least three, connected neighbouring buildings or sites producing on a yearly basis more primary energy than what they use) to explore new tools, collaborations and business models for solving the energy transition problem.

    MEDIA: AUDIOVISUALS ON DEMAND

    The days of arguing over remote control possession in front of ponderous television sets are behind us. Nor do we bother moving around antennas to tune in to our favourite radio show.

    We no longer solely rely on television and radio to take in or daily portion of news and audiovisual entertainment.

    The ways in which audiovisual media reaches our eyes, ears and brains are no longer linear, but almost de facto on-demand. Traditional television companies are competing for audiences, both with digital giants (e.g. Netflix, Amazon, etc.) and socially curated content creators (e.g. vloggers). A similar shift is impacting good old radio – albeit at a considerably lower pace.

    Many of the traditional companies are struggling to reinvent themselves in the face of such competition and seem hesitant to fully embrace the opportunities new technologies offer. On the receiver side, to what extent are we prepared to trade the traditional linear video and audio shapes – familiar and uncomplicated in use – for new technologies that are fast and versatile and nearly unlimited in their choice range of audiovisual entertainment? Let’s explore the opportunities at this linear-digital intersection, aiming for novel audiovisual entertainment all while taking along the best of what radio and television have offered us these past decades!

    FINANCE: Customer Delight Through Open Banking

    As consumers of digital products and services, we have become increasingly accustomed to easy-to-use, frictionless experiences across an ever greater variety of touchpoints. While both fintech startups and banks have made great strides in improving the customer experience,

    the emergence of open banking interfaces should further boost innovation and open up opportunities for startups. The purpose of open banking is to let third parties use the information stored at financial institutions and thereby develop helpful services and tools for customers. It gives banks an opportunity to better serve their customer base through third-party services (like taking insurance when buying a plane ticket), while startups benefit from the bank’s scale to quickly reach large numbers of customers.

    This evolution brings along a wave of opportunities, pushing banks to prove they are capable of using their imagination and getting creative. Let’s ride this new wave of collaboration between traditional banks and fintech startups!

    FOOD: Hacking Bread Waste

    In Belgium we waste a shocking 345kg of food per person per year, and nearly a third of it is bread. If we could reduce the mountains of bread waste, we’d make a real impact on food waste overall. In this workshop we’ll explore opportunities for turning bread into a natural resource for other products (e.g. beer) and we’ll look for ways to reduce waste at every step in the supply chain, from factory to supermarket to consumer.

    MOBILITY: Mobility-as-a-service and new mobility paradigmes

    Uber may have its roots as an alternative taxi service, but it also ushered in a new paradigm. Uberisation now refers to any business model where agents exchange under-utilised capacity of mobility assets (human or machine) through an online platform. A closely related new paradigm is mobility-as-a-service, a vision where customers don’t own vehicles but have access anytime and anyplace to the mobility of their choosing and only pay for use. How far can we stretch these concepts and truly make them a multimodal reality?

    CITIES: Creating vibrant cities in the age of e-commerce

    Join us in this workshop where we’ll come up with ideas for keeping our cities vibrant centres of creativity and economic growth. To put it bluntly, e-commerce could kill our city centres. If competition from the ever-larger e-commerce titans kill the city centre shopping districts, then city centres could enter a vicious downward spiral of fewer shops, fewer restaurants and hospitality, fewer companies and jobs, fewer people and ever more delipidated buildings. In contrast, a city that clusters and connects the worlds of work, culture, art, hospitality and commerce in interesting, creative ways are engines of growth and creativity.

    WORK: Empowering youth toward meaningful work

    In this workshop we’re going to come up with new ideas for fighting the scourge of youth unemployment. It is totally unacceptable that so many young people in this affluent part of the world are stuck in a vicious cycle of unemployment and marginalisation. Let’s come up with new initiatives that reach out to unemployed youth, that give them opportunities for building skills and gaining meaningful work experience.

    MAKE: Connecting manufacturers and consumers

    Most manufacturers of consumer products have no direct interactive relationship with consumers beyond perhaps a contact centre and social media activity. This relationship tends to be mediated by retailers, marketing, market research and R&D. However, consumers’ expectations are changing rapidly. They want more transparency regarding sustainability. They want more personalised products and tailored customer service. Adding complexity to this relationship is they rely on multiple channels and information sources in their purchasing journey.

    In this workshop we will explore how we can build more direct relationships between manufacturers and consumers so as to speed up product development, better personalise products and create more delightful customer experiences.

    OCEAN: Radical ideas for Belgian blue tourism

    The oceans provide us with food, energy and transport routes, but they’re also a source of pure joy. People love going to the beach. In fact, tourism is the biggest ocean-related industry. We spend our seaside holidays sunbathing, swimming, surfing, sailing, diving, fishing, bird watching, walking or simply gazing at the ocean.

    In Belgium, we’ve built a huge sea-oriented tourist industry that is based mainly on real estate and a seasonal hotel and restaurant industry. It is also an industry that has extracted a huge environmental cost, with little “natural” beauty of our coastline remaining. And strategically, we seem to be more concerned with protecting our legacy tourist industry instead of imagining a more diverse and sustainable blue tourism future. If you think we can do better, join this workshop where we’ll come up with radical new ideas for having good clean fun in and at the sea!

    EDUCATION: Innovating outside the school system

    In this workshop we will address two interrelated challenges from without the school system.     We’ll explore novel ideas for extracurricular activities that teach children essential skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and empathy. We’ll explore ways of engaging a variety of stakeholders including youth groups and sports clubs in educational activities. And we’ll come up with ideas for better orientating – helping children make better decisions about what they want to study and do later in their career.

    HEALTH: Our digital twins

    In Europe, we can do a much better job preventing disease and illness. In Flanders, for example, the Agentschap Zorg & Gezondheid estimates that nearly one in five of all deaths in 2014 could ‘theoretically’ have been avoided, and 82% of those could have been avoided through prevention. In fact, our entire healthcare system is still based on a curative model where we only really intervene when the damage is already done.

     

    Imagine having a digital guardian angel that automatically crunches vast amounts of biological, behavioural and environmental data to spot and predict personalised health risks, before they cause real harm. Imagine having a ‘digital twin’ that automatically simulates (or tests) changes or interventions in your lifestyle or environment before they are actually executed. Or testing novel drug candidates before they are even synthesised. A kind of completely virtual clinical trial! Can you imagine the power this would give us in both preventing ill health and proactively pursuing health and well-being?

    In this workshop, we’ll explore ideas for making your digital twin a reality, both in the back-end (data sources, AI, etc.) and the front-end (interfaces, etc).

    CIRCULAR: Sustainable Art and Art for Sustainability

    We are racing to extinction, unless we change our consumption and production behaviour. While art isn’t something we usually associate with the quest for a circular economy, the art industry does in fact need to clean up its act. Did you know that most visual art never actually reaches an audience; that most artistic materials such as paper and paint carry a significant environmental footprint, and that most of it is wasted?

    In this workshop we’ll explore how digital tools and bio-materials could radically change the way art is made and distributed. We’ll explore how digital tools could reduce art material consumption, scale up art consumption, while enhancing artist individually. We’ll explore bio-alternative materials such as bacterial pigments and microbial paper.  And finally we’ll consider how art as a storytelling medium can help facilitate societal change.

    ENERGY: Helping consumers get the most out of their energy ecosystems

    The energy setup of our households is rapidly become more complex. More and more of us are producing energy through solar panels, solar boilers and heat pumps. Our appliances are becoming smarter and increasingly connected. And the electric car is rapidly becoming a reality.     In this workshop we will explore new solutions that empower consumers to get the most value of their home energy ecosystems. We will address questions such as how to better engage consumers in their energy management, through better monitoring and management tools that deliver real value. We will come up with solutions that maximise the value of consumers’ homes because your home is more than a potential energy producer – it can deliver demand response services too.  And we’ll take a closer look at energy storage, beyond batteries, by looking at the potential of heat.

    FINANCE: The Protective Power Of Fintech: Taking Control Of Our Cyber Safety

    Technologies on the rise like blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and the continued “democratisation” of financial data promise huge reductions and efficiency gains in all sorts of financial transactions. For example, blockchain technology could eliminate the need for intermediaries in any asset transfer, radically speeding up such transactions and creating greater transparency. But as the serviceability of these fintech applications increases, so does the risk of those applications becoming a source of weakness and entry points for cyber-attacks.

    The good news is that – when used in the right way – these same technologies are becoming increasingly proficient at outsmarting greedy data scrapers. ‘Regtech’ and ‘SupTech’ emerge as promising financial consumer protection frameworks based on regulatory compliance and supervisory processes. Although vigilance remains necessary. Join us in this workshop to find out how we, as customers, can employ fintech to take control of our cyber safety and protect our financial identities.

    MEDIA: BELGIANFACTS

    The relationship between politics and media is known to be complex, mutually influencing and not without controversy. In order to facilitate meaningful discussions about politics, the newsroom of De Tijd wants to collect and present reliable, high quality data in an understandable and logically structured way. To this end, the newsroom engages in the development of a new project that is inspired by ‘USAFacts’, an initiative by Steve Ballmer (former CEO of Microsoft). USAFacts has the objective of showing where the government money comes from, where it is spent, whom it serves and what the outcomes are.

    The time is more than right to build a ‘BelgiumFacts’, allowing us to verify our political inclinations with solid and sure facts. Come and join De Tijd in this workshop where we will reflect on where to find this data, how to visualize it and how to provide access for as many citizens as possible.

    The challenge curators, together with the Hack Belgium Event Content Team, will decide which 5 teams will bring their project on the big stage.

    They will assess the following 4 criteria:

    > Impact: how likely is the idea to solve the challenge at hand?

    > Viability: how likely is the idea to solve the challenge at hand?

    > Novelty: how different is it from everything else that’s available, locally and globally?

    BIG STAGE PITCHES: 5 PROJECTS BEST REPRESENTING THE SPIRIT OF HACK BELGIUM

    Bear in mind that these 5 teams are not necessarily the ones that we think will make it big. Instead, they will showcase the variety of projects developed at HB and the values and principles behind the event.
